DescriptionFor a truly immersive digital video viewing experience, the user must be engaged to the extent that they forget they are viewing an artificial environment, mediated by technology. This project seeks to enable such an immersive, engaging, lifelike viewing experience by integrating the respective advantages offered by three separate technologies currently reaching in this direction—3D (multiview) video, High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging, and ultra-high definition (UHD). Augmented seamlessly with additional informative content when desired by an actively engaged viewer, the resulting development of virtual and immersive environments will significantly increase the viewer’s ability to absorb and retain educational information (e.g., in a massive open online course (MOOC)), be entertained by a movie or TV show, or enjoy a more engaging social media experience.
Our project addresses the inherent technological challenges in realizing this vision through the following inter-related objectives:
- Developing guidelines and tools for capturing high quality life-like immersive video content
- Developing 3D HDR UHD objective quality metrics for future 3D camera systems, displays and compression/content delivery schemes
- Developing scalable compression schemes for efficient transmission over different networks and compatibility with a variety of playback devices
- Developing receiver-end post-processing schemes for the best possible 3D HDR UHD quality of experience on a range of 3D devices with different displaying capabilities
