Research >> Convergence of UHD, 3D and HDR Technologies
DescriptionThe goal of this project is to provide an immersive, high-quality viewing experience for all visual display devices operated at home and remotely, from TVs to monitors used for educational purposes to smart phones used to remotely monitor and interface with home technologies. The key to making these experiences as simple, enjoyable, and impactful as possible is to refine current 3D technology so that the perceived image quality and viewing comfort are significantly better than those of conventional systems. In this research, we are developing a comprehensive suite of new methods to efficiently capture and display 3D high dynamic range (HDR) content for a life-like interaction with visual displays in the home and beyond. Viewers will enjoy watching lifelike 3D content adapted to their particular device, ranging from mobile handsets to immersive multiview displays with surround sound, delivering a truly personalized multi-screen experience. User interaction will be available in a 3D immersive format using new gesture-based recognition schemes that will allow engagement with visual-based technologies in the home to be simple and intuitive, improving the overall experience and having a lasting impact. To this end, we are developing new guidelines and methods for generating interactive menus and titles on 3D content as well as new gesture recognition schemes that will work on traditional two-view 3D displays and emerging glasses-free multiview displays.
